The L. L. Winship/PEN New England Award

Entry Requirements, Deadlines and Application

PEN New England is now accepting submissions for the L.L. Winship / PEN New England Award for books published in 2007.

The established by The Boston Globe in 1975, will again be co-sponsored in 2007 by PEN New England, a branch of PEN American Center. Three prizes will be awarded: $1,000 for the best book of poetry, $1,000 for the best book of fiction, and $1,000 for the best book of nonfiction. All entries must be by New England authors or have a New England topic or setting.

Last April, writers K.C. Frederick, Louise Glück, and Sebastian Junger received the 2007 L.L. Winship/PEN New England Awards: Mr. Frederick was honored in the fiction category for Inland (Permanent Press); Ms. Gluck in the poetry category for Averno (Farrar, Straus and Giroux); and, Sebastian Junger in the non-fiction category for A Death in Belmont (W.W. Norton).

The award will be presented, along with the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award, at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston on Sunday, March 30, 2008. Previous winners of the L.L. Winship Award include E.B. White, Andre Dubus, Susan Cheever, Tracy Kidder, Mary Oliver, Susan Quinn, Jill Ker Conway, Jan Swafford, Anita Shreve, Edward Delaney, Swanee Hunt, Kevin Goodan, Stanley Kunitz, Leo Damrosch, and Jennifer Haigh.

To qualify, a book must be a first edition work of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, published in 2007, with a New England topic or setting, and/or by an author whose principal residence is in New England. No electronic submissions, e-books, or self-published books are eligible.

Deadline: December 21, 2007 Postmark (Early submissions are encouraged. Galleys are acceptable.)

To submit books for the award: Mail three copies, a $35 entry fee* for each title, and the application form to:

*Exceptions will be made for small press submissions: if your press's annual net sales do not exceed 4 million dollars, you need not submit the entry fee.
