“Literature is the best thing humanity has. Poetry is the heart of literature, the highest concentration of everything that is the best in the world and in man. It is the only true food for your soul.”
Lyudmila Ulitskaya

We are a chapter of PEN American Center, part of a global association of writers celebrating literature and defending free expression. We make our home at the MIT School of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences.

Peter Matthiessen Honored

  • Maclaurin Building Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, MA 02142 (map)

Peter Matthiessen to receive the 2013 Henry David Thoreau Prize for Literary Excellence in Nature Writing.

Matthiessen is a three-time National Book Award-winning American novelist, non-fiction writer and prominent environmental activist. His books include The Snow Leopard, In the Spirit of Crazy Horse, At Play in the Fields of the Lord, and Shadow Country, a revision of his Watson trilogy that the New York Review of Books hails as

''... brilliantly told, not just a tour de force in its stylistic range, but a great American novel, as powerful a reading experience as nearly any in our literature.  A bravura performance, at once history, fiction, and myth — as well as the capstone to the career of one of the most admired and admirable writers of our time.''

Previous winners include Greta Erhlich in 2010, E. O. Wilson in 2011, and Gary Snyder in 2012. This event is free and open to the public.
