“Literature is the best thing humanity has. Poetry is the heart of literature, the highest concentration of everything that is the best in the world and in man. It is the only true food for your soul.”
Lyudmila Ulitskaya

We are a chapter of PEN American Center, part of a global association of writers celebrating literature and defending free expression. We make our home at the MIT School of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences.

NEWS, FACTS, TRUTH, CONSEQUENCES

August 2017: On Tyranny

“Since in the age of the internet we are all publishers, each of us bears some private responsibility for the public’s sense of truth.”  Timothy Snyder, On Tyranny

"It is not normal for the President of the United States to refuse to offer even passing respect to the idea that telling the truth matters. It is not normal for the President of the United States to pretend that any news coverage he dislikes is “fake news” that has been fabricated by reporters who made up the story as well as their sources. It is harmful to our democracy and to our respect for the Constitution, and we all—whatever our political affiliation—must continue to stand up and say so."

"When a movement is strong enough, it doesn't matter who is in the White House. What really matters is what people do. And what people say. And what people demand."

The Trump Administration will continue to abuse its power. We'll continue to resist and exercise our First Amendment rights to protest and free expression. And journalists and reporters will continue to do their jobs.

In 2018 every member of the U.S. House of Representatives, 33 Senators, and 15 Governors are up for re-election. Plus many more on the all-important local levels.  Call them. Call them again, and keep calling. Remind them that there will be consequences for their actions and that we are paying attention. FiveThirtyEight has an up-to-date & time tally of Senate & House members' votes with or against the president.

The ability to speak truth to power is a primary underpinning of a healthy democracy. It is also a core obligation for writers, journalists, and others who are committed to protecting free expression. This toolkit is part of PEN America’s #LouderTogether campaign to stand as a bulwark defending free expression, free assembly, the diversity of voices, and the force of reason. It's a work in progress and will be updated regularly.
